Malbec is the most widely planted red grape varietal in Argentina, where it has adapted very well to the country’s varied soils and climates. It achieves especially high quality in the viticultural areas of Maipu, Lujan de Cuyo and the Valle de Uco in the Mendoza province, so it is here that we select our Malbec. Located in the dry foothills of the Andes range, which span from 750 to 1400 feet in elevation, these vineyards are judiciously drip-irrigated with mineral-rich water from the melting snowpack. The vines—trained in a vertical shoot positioning trellis system and deeply rooted in low-nutrient, sandy loam soils—yield concentrated, balanced fruit.
The Argentines traditionally pour Malbec with grilled steaks; try it and you’ll understand why.
