Old friend Eric Solomon of European Cellars has released the new vintage of Cote Est and it is a head turner. The 2011 scored 88 points from the Wine Advocate and we would not be surprised if this vintage scored higher. Winemaker Jean-Marc Lafage, who also makes Evodia, knows the southern French region of Rousillon well. His family has been in the viticultural business here for six generations. The curious blend of fifty percent Grenache Blanc from 100 year old vines, thirty percent Chardonnay and twenty percent Marsanne displays a beautiful nose of white peach, citrus and flowery notes. The Roussillon region allows a large number of varietals, giving Jean-Marc the ability to create a unique wine hard to replicate anywhere else in the world especially at this price. This wine is one hundred percent stainless steel fermented to preserve its fresh flavors. This Languedoc has good structure and a longer finish than we expected. Try this wine as an aperitif or accompanying a white bean and chicken salad.
