This wine is so much more than a pretty label – in this instance one that bears an image of the deer indigenous to this NE region of Spain. Considered the leading white wine of Spain, the better examples of Rueda are made from 100% Verdejo (although Viura and Sauvignon Blanc are also allowed). Shaya – a new project between the Gil family of Jumilla, Enrique Busto, and Jorge Ordońez – displays the distinct character and elegance of a serious wine. Pale yellow with a tinge of green, the nose shows pear, apricot, apple and lemon with the slightest hint of fennel. The palate is pear and mineral with a tiny hint of sweet fruit and great acidity. The texture is supple - richer than one would expect, with a nice, long finish.
