The D.O. Montsant - where the well-known Gil family and the winemaking team of Australian Liz Reed and Catalan winemaker Ricard Rofes established Celler Can Blau - cradles the more prominent Priorat D.O. on three sides in a horse-shoe shaped appellation, many of whose wines ring with some of the same authority and possess much of the same panache. After Robert Parker awarded 90 points to the 2007 vintage, Can Blau expanded production, making an even more affordable blend of Carignan, Syrah and Garnacha, calling it simply 'Blau'. Purple-robed, Blau offers a bouquet of cedar, mineral, baking spices, blueberry, and black cherry. Delicious already, Blau's full-bodied, layered flavors and firm tannic structure suggest a future sure to evolve solidly for several years' more worth of backyard barbecues or beachy picnics.
