The Cariñena designation of origin – the oldest D.O. of Aragon (the first in Spain and home to some of the oldest vines in the country) – gives us this 100% Garnacha, compliments of a project hatched by old friend Baron Ziegler at Valkyrie Selections and the dynamic, award-winning young winemaker, Ana Becoechea. Called Lechuza (lay-CHOO-zuh) – for the yellow/gold owls flecked with white, black and grey who proliferate in and around the village of Longares – vinification and aging for this wine occur strictly in tank to accentuate the pure essence of the fruit and to remind us that the absence of oak can be a very good thing indeed. Bright ruby in color, with beautiful scents of raspberry, blueberry, and cherry, this juicy, fruit-driven, wine shows a sexy floral note and a whisper of white pepper on the finish. Food match: quinoa salad with guacamole sauce; millet and cauliflower dumplings in pumpkin sauce; and/or timbales of wild mushroom.
|Wine maker notes
|Beautiful scents of violets and blueberry are met by rich flavors of blackberry and wild strawberry. A full throttle wine with big flavors and rich texture. Enjoying this wine is simple: cut the foil, pull the cork and savor it! Great wine doesn't always have to be so complicated...
