Wine Enthusiast 96 points - Gorgeous, amplified aromas of wild berry, plum and fine herbs are crystal clear and magnetic. This beautiful Priorat is layered, smooth as glass and exemplary in every way. Flavors of mixed black fruits, cocoa, toast and schisty mineral finish in a swirl of chocolate, blackened toast, licorice and peppercorn. Best from 2015-2018. - Editor’s Choice (Nov 2013)
Wine Advocate 94 points - Rene Barbier (Junior) kindly put together a blend of the five barrels that will go to constitute the 2010 Clos Mogador. It has a stricter, fresher bouquet than the 2009, with great minerality and sparkling precision. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins and wonderful purity. It exhibits notes of dark cherries, crushed stone, slate and touches of thyme and white pepper towards the finish, which has immense precision and focus. This is going to be a razor-sharp Clos Mogador - do not wait to place your order! (Apr 2012)
The estate of Clos Mogador is a must for any serious Spanish wine aficionado. Located in Gratallops, in the heart of the Priorat hills, René Barbier, one of the founders of the Priorat revolution, creates his intensely concentrated wine from a blend of 40% Garnacha (from 80 year old vines), 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Syrah and 5% Pinot Noir, Mourvedre and Merlot. This distinctive blend balances the power and massive structure typical of Priorat with an elegance and finesse that belies its aging potential. While the Clos Mogador will continue to improve for 10 years or more, it is delicious now. Vintage after vintage, this wine has consistently received high scores from the wine trade.
|Clos Mogador is a winery found in the village of Gratallops. It was founded in 1982, and is owned by Rene Barbier, one of the Priorat´s Renaissance pioneers. These pioneers came in the late 70’s and introduced French varietals and modern winemaking techniques. This led to the production of rare and exceptional wines, resulting in promoting Priorat to a DOC, the highest wine category in Spain.
Clos Mogador winery covers 13 hectares. Six hectares are made of 80 years old Carinena, two hectares of 6 years old Cabernet-Sauvignon, three hectares of 6 years old Garnacha and 2 ha of 6 year old are Syrah.
The cellar produces 1000 cases of Manyetes wine on a 10 ha surface. It is very difficult to produce more quantities of Manyetes wine due to the quality of the soil. The vineyards of Clos Mogador grow in one of the poorest schist soils, Licorella, of the Priorat DOC.
