Wine Spectator 90 points - Ripe but well-focused, with straw, white peach, kiwifruit pulp and pink grapefruit notes all wound together and extending through the well-defined finish. Very solid, this should mellow with modest cellaring. Drink now through 2015.—J.M. (Mar 20 2013)

The Buitenverwachting (now there’s a mouthful: literally it means ‘Beyond Expectation’ in Dutch) Estate occupies east-facing slopes of the Constantiaberg Mountains, cooled by sea breezes from False Bay – a mere 12 km distant. (Locals abbreviated this long-winded name to ‘Bayten’ long ago and Buitenverwachting changed their label in 2012 to make the moniker official.) The wine, too, is quite a mouthful: pale lemon yellow in the glass; bouquet of green fig, gooseberry and green pepper; crisp and zesty with grassy herbal notes on the palate with elegant underpinnings of mineral and chalk.. Dry and full-bodied, with a long lingering finish, serve with the daily catch saffron couscous, preserved lemon and Chermoula-marinated roasted peppers. (Wine Spectator rating: 90pts.)
