Blanchards’ alum, Francis Sanders, has produced another career first: the 2011 Andre Montessuy, Coteaux Bourguignons, a brand new appellation from the ‘Burgundian Hills’ (replacing the prior, oxymoronic ‘Grand Ordinaire’ zone, ranging from the Auxerrois – about as far north as Épineuil, north-east of Chablis – down to and including Beaujolais). Getting in on the ground floor with connections means that Francis scored big thrice: first, Jean-Charles Boisset the elder, father-in-law of Gina Gallo, graciously allowed the use of one of his grower-name labels, a portion of his Southern Burgundy Pinot fruit, the run of one of his production facilities, and help facilitating the importing of these small quantities to the States; second, another connection from Chateau Corton-Andre supplied more Pinot at a rate that works for this project now and for the future; and, third, yet another friend offered enough well-known Cote Chalonnaise Pinot fruit to seal the deal. The resulting wine is deep garnet in color, with a complex nose of wild strawberry, morello cherry and mocha, a full-bodied palate (when compared with old world Pinot in the price range) and an elegant, persistent finish. Food match: wild salmon with pearl couscous and oven-roasted tomatoes.
