From Jean-Marie Guffens and his Verget winery, one of Blanchard’s long-time favorite white Burgundy producers, comes this lovely Chardonnay, although not from Burgundy. This great value comes from his Château des Tourettes estate in Vaucluse, just north of Provence. It is the antithesis of ‘New World’ Chardonnay: subtle, restrained and un-oaked, yet it is a flavor-packed, mouth-filling, complete wine. Foregoing the sweet vanilla flavor and buttery texture of too many entries in this category leaves only … a fresh, vibrant character, an earthy texture, a faint hint of spice and a very long, persistent finish that lingers deliciously on the palate for a good minute and more. Decidedly dry, yet with a gracious fruity entry and mid-mouth, try this smooth, richly-flavored wine with a seafood bisque à la Provençale.
