Vinous 91 points - (14.8% alcohol): Health red-ruby color. Cassis, licorice, coffee and a medicinal coolness on the varietally expressive nose, complemented by sexy oak tones. Pliant, concentrated dark berry and spice flavors are lifted by subtle menthol and mineral nuances. Suave and refined Cabernet with lovely sweet fruit and a long, ripely tannic finish. Less oaky than the 1694 bottlings and that’s fine with me.
91+ Points (Jun 2015)
The Rust en Vrede Cabernet became a favorite of
mine when visiting Stellenbosch in 2013. The Winery
was established in 1694 and is proud to be part of a
remarkable three-hundred-year-old wine tradition.
There is a reason why Wine Spectator has rated this
wine 91 points for the last 4 vintages, including 2013.
This is a wine with full body and a firm structure yet
is completely approachable now and will cellar nicely
through 2020. In the words of the wine-maker this wine
is “deep opaque-colored, classic Cabernet character
with cassis and lead pencil aromas and notes of mocha.
This Cab offers a firm tannin structure in a tighter style
of wine with good phenolic ripeness and a defined
finish.” This is a good bet for stocking up and enjoying over
the next several years as it develops.
