We have been trying more wines from Portugal and loved this generous red from Alvaro Castro that really over delivers for the price. Alvaro, a civil engineer by trade, inherited the hillside vineyard Quinta da Pellada in 1980 and started his second career in viticulture and oenology. He is now considered one of the most talented winemakers in the country. Adding new vineyards to his original purchase Alvaro, along with his daughter Maria, fashion a mind-numbing range of single-vineyard, single-varietal and blended wines using over 30 local grape varitietals. DAC is a blend of Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo), Jaen (Mencia) and Alfrocheiro from the mountainous Dão region in central Portugal. Showcasing ripe blackberry and plum flavors this luscious red shows remarkable elegance and finesse. Try this wine with a cheese and charcuterie plate or grilled meat and vegetables.
