A blend of 75% Sangiovese, 15% Merlot, 10% Ciliegiolo, aged in 225 liter American and Slavonian oak barrels (carati) for 12 months. Erik Banti produced his first wine here in 1981, in the fabled La Maremma, the southwestern coastal part of Tuscany. Sangiovese in the Maremma develops a personality of its own. Here it is known as Morellino, a diminutive of morello, which refers to the wine’s blackish hue. This is richly fruited with a touch of wood and country rusticity. It is deep and concentrated with evolved, smoky aromas and flavors of herbs, spices, black cherries, violets and walnut husk with a vanilla undertone, well-measured tannin and excellent length. Affordable for everyday drinking and versatile at the table, pair this wine with everything from burgers to pizza, pasta and grilled red or white meats.
