Winemaker extraordinaire Nick Goldschmidt wows us again with another rich, powerful red at an unusually reasonable price: this time the Bellarina Meritage from Ehret Family Winery in Sonoma's Knights Valley. Ehret, which has sold its superior fruit to many well-know wineries since 1996, has been making wine under its own label for the past ten years, selecting only the finest grapes for their family-named wines. Concentrated and full-flavored, this Meritage blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot entices with aromas and flavors of dark berries, mocha, raspberry and sweet spice. Ripe berries and dark plum fill the juicy, deep finish and call for substantial fare, such as marinated sirloin with gorgonzola or rosemary and garlic roast leg of lamb. A display of exceptional winemaking prowess, this wine is also showcases the high quality of wine coming out of the Knights Valley region. With only 824 cases produced, it is a fleeting opportunity not to be missed.
